How to Choose the Right Health Insurance Policy

Make sure you choose coverage that fits your needs. Find out how to choose the right health insurance policy here.

Dare to Choose

It is always hard to choose when you have multiple options; here are some tips and how to decipher the best health insurance policy.

  • Determine the extent of the coverage you need. Are you looking for coverage that will pay for doctor visits, prescriptions, and hospital stays or do you want a policy that only covers catastrophic illnesses? This is an important question to ask before you compare health insurance rates. Certain plans exist that will cover only the bare necessities, such as hospitalizations and catastrophic illnesses/injuries. These plans tend to be more affordable than plans that offer more comprehensive coverage.
  • Figure out your budget. The amount of coverage you can afford will play an important role when you compare health insurance rates, so map out your budget beforehand. Figure out what you can comfortably afford to pay monthly for your health insurance premium and also what you can absorb in terms of deductibles and co-pays.
  • Ask yourself how much risk you're willing to absorb. When you absorb more financial risk with your health insurance by paying higher deductibles and co-pays, the price of your premiums will go down. As you compare health insurance rates, consider this trade-off. If you are willing to pay more in out-of-pocket costs, at least initially, you might be able to save considerably on your premiums. On the other hand, you might know because of your tight budget that you cannot afford high out-of-pocket costs, which you can minimize with HMO plans.

Only You Can Make the Right Decision

We can offer you a guide on how to choose the best health insurance policy, but when it comes down to you it only you can make the best decision.

  • Decide how important health care flexibility and choice in health care are to you. Would you prefer to go to any doctor you like? Do you mind having to go through a primary care physician before seeing a specialist? These are important questions to ask when you compare health insurance rates. Usually, the more flexibility and freedom of choice you have built into your plan, the more you will pay. For example, indemnity plans offer maximum flexibility but often cost more in either out-of-pocket costs or premiums. Conversely, HMOs offer the least degree of flexibility in health care, but they are also the most economical health insurance plan.
  • Assess your need for prescription drug coverage. Some plans cover prescriptions, others do not. For some people, prescription drug coverage is not important because they do not take medications regularly. If that is the case, you can opt for a plan without prescription coverage to save yourself a bundle on your premium. Prescription coverage is often one of the most expensive components of a health insurance premium.
